Discovering Racconigi Castle

The royal castle of Racconigi (in the local Piedmontese language ‘Ël Castel ëd Racunìs’) is located in the town of Racconigi, in the Province of Cuneo, not far from Turin.

During its almost millenary history, it has undergone numerous changes, becoming the property of the Savoy family in the second half of the fourteenth century. Later, it became the official residence of the Savoia-Carignano branch, and was then used as the royal holiday estate of the Kings of Sardinia (and then of Italy) in summer and autumn months.

Having become a immensely popular cultural site and museum, the castle forms part of the circuit of the Savoy Residences of Piedmont and of Lower Piedmont’s Castelli Aperti, or ‘Open Castles’, programme. In 1997, it was included in the series of Savoy residences listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
