Saluzzo

Saluzzo is a picture-postcard village with cobbled streets, long arcades, flowered terraces, small squares, little churches exuding incense and frescoed facades overlooked by the inevitable fortress and the imposing mountain of Monviso.

Located just 25 km from the Hotel Terre dei Salici, Saluzzo was once the capital of the Italian state of the Marquisate of Saluzzo, and is a fundamental stop on any trip to the Piedmont Region.

There, you can visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, built from 1491 on the commission of Ludovico II, Casa Pellico, the birthplace and childhood home of Silvio Pellico, the author of ‘Le Mie Prigioni’, the Church of San Giovanni, set below street level in Saluzzo’s old town, the fortress of Castiglia, a place steeped in historical events, built at the end of the 12th century as a residence of the marquises, later enlarged to become a refined noble residence, which suffered unstoppable degradation leading to it becoming a French hospital barracks and later a prison, and, finally, Casa Cavassa, the perfect residence for giving you an idea of just how noble families once lived in Saluzzo.

In the surroundings of Saluzzo, you can visit Manta Castle, a medieval fortress that, in its Baronial Hall, houses one of the most important pictorial series dating from the European late-gothic.
